The Vault (Atomsko Sklonište)

The cult RPG from 1990s - Fallout - provided us with numerous hours of adventuring in the Wasteland, postapocalyptic remains of the west coast USA. Nutty humor, a bunch of references to popular culture, breaking the fourth wall, radioactive bestiary and, inevitably, the quest of saving the world as well as layer of philosophical issues.

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to survive the apocalypse? If the end of the world is the most democratic event in history - it matters to everyone, then postapocalypse is reserved for the true macho only. Who are the preppers, is surviving overrated and what are the alternatives? May the threat of world-wide annihilation change the way we think about politics and solve our problems? What are the ethical resposibilities of scientists developing potentialy dangerous technologies? How to prepare the society for the best to confront global dangers, and how not to mess everything? Are all scientists nutty, if not crazy? Are we allowed to tackle with parts of nature we are not supposed to know about?

All that, and more: how women are potrayed in Fallout games? Is it unethical to use drugs in the game? Or becoming slave trader? Does life have any meaning? Who is it suppose to care if I drug myself or not as long as no-one else is hurt? Why nonviolence is not so cool? What kind of community gamers form and what is so appealing in spending hours tailing virtual world if you're not getting any money?

These are some of the questions we ask ourselves travelling from Vault 13 to Boston. These are question we ask in virtual world of the Wasteland, and, with slight modification, in the world around us. Wellcome to philosophy! Monsters that lurk here are not FEV mutations nor maniac robots but they are dangerous not less and they may destroy the world you know. Arm yourself with logic and curiosity and let's step out of the security of the world we know!
